Terrorists…is it really a threat?

After reading this three page article, it was very interesting but a little short, and it also made some good points on terrorism and some ways to effect it. It also talked about how people feared anthrax and most people that recieved it were either politicians or journalists. I can’t deny it, when anthrax first hit the news i was a little skeptical about opening my mail.

When I think about terrorism, i really don’t think about it, they are random acts that people have no control over it. While reading the article they made a good point on how people fear things they have no control over. Like I don’t like when my friends drive fast but when im doing it, its ok. In the atricle they mentioned that young men are robbed the most but are the less likely to fear it. Like people are more likely to fear a plane crash rather than being in car accident.

Another example would be Philadelphia, which is where I live, alot of people are afraid of the homicides that aren’t really the targets. It effects me but it’s nothing i think about everyday, and it’s also about what kind of life you are living. I think terrorism is overrated in the United States, because we see it so much in Iraq, we think it’s going to happen that frequent in America.

  1. People in the united states are to fearful of bigger things than the little things that happen all the time. I feel you about Philly because a lot of people feel they are going to get murdered when they are not the targets, but there is a good amount of innocent people that do get killed on the streets of Philly because these “gangsters” act stupid. What i found really weird was when i first came to IUP and notice they have Pittsburgh news a lot of the new comes out of Pittsburgh. What i notice different from Pittsburgh and Philly is the murders, every time I’m home in Philly all you hear is “Murder in the fish town section of the city” but in Pittsburgh they don’t have much if any murders its usually “the pens lose a tough on to rival Philly” or something like that. Before 9/11 terrorism wasn’t on many of the Americans minds but after 9/11 thats all we worried about and its became a big thing where people worry more about getting tainted mail then worrying about the crimes thats happening around them. You did good on this and i agree with you.
