After watching Naomi Klein’s No logo my opinion on Nike and its factories remains the same, I still believe its just business and it was a good business move. Nobody makes those people work in those factories, and these wages that are considered low are on American terms. Those wages might be low in America but they might be considered better than most jobs in Korea or Vietnam. The Nike model might effect factories in the US by causing people to start trying to get their wages raised and better working conditions. I don’t think this is something we should worry about because soon these factories will be run by machines and there won’t be any need for sweatshops. I think the McJobs are jobs that are considered too easy and are more considered for teenagers. Mcjobs wages don’t reflect the company’s earnings. I worked at K-Mart and I don’t know if that is a Mcjob or not, but working there was a little difficult because I had to know about every product in the store.
Can i get a No Logo and with a McJob?

Channel One…Is it Good or Bad?
Channel One is now something i can’t get off my mind, just a couple weeks ago it was something that i never heard, but just these past couple of days its something I couldn’t stop from thinking about. Will Channel One soon takeover all of the schools? My opinion towards Channel One is both good and bad, it is hard for me to choose between the two, i believe it determines your situation, and how you view Channel One. For example the CEO of Channel One believes it is best for schools, on the other hand somebody might think Channel One is bribery towards lower achieving schools, or maybe someone just like me think its both good and bad because students don’t really pay attention to it and they receive free electronics. So after reading this Blog leave me a comment and tell me where you stand on this situation.
Channel One is something I never heard about until reading it in the book, it seems like Channel One only targets schools of lower class with lower grades. Since these types of schools have no funding then where else would they get new computers, and other electronics they might need. Sometimes these things aren’t that new. Letting Channel One takeover your school makes your school become part of a market, and now companies are now free to advertise when your students should be getting more time to focus on work. Maybe Channel One would be better if students chose to sign up for it, and then if they went through with it, at the end of the semester they could win an ipod or laptop or something. Channel One cannot target schools of an upper class because they don’t need them; they already have nice computers and anything they need. I think Channel One was created to target lower achieving schools.
Since Channel One is something i never really experienced, i decided to ask a few students on how they felt about channel one. Most students said that it didnt really affect them and channel one is just like watching commercials. Most students during Channel One work on stuff from other classes. Channel One doesn’t seem to really affect the students, its just something thats there. Most Students say Channel One gives them okay equipment, its not the best but its not the worst one student quoted. I believe if i experienced Channel One, i would have the same opinion and would use it as a break from class, and work on other projects. Channel One from the students point of view is sort of a neutral look, it doesn’t seem good or bad. I also believe Channel One could be neutral, they gain nothing but they also lose nothing but like fifteen minutes.
Channel One targets schools that are lacking grade wise and that are less funded, this creates a perfect marketing scheme for them to fill that gap technology wise. Since most of those schools dont have any funding, Channel One can be looked at as their savior, who wouldn’t take free technology for fifteen minutes of commercials that most students don’t pay attention to. If i was in the situation of needing funding and lacking technology, Channel One would most certainly be one of my choices.
Suppose Channel One starts to target schools that are more funded and have better grades and are somehow able to advertise within those schools. Would Channel One start to become more publicized and become a problem, and what if those schools started to decline slowly. Maybe Channel One was the starting point in those schools getting lower grades, and they just started giving them electronics to make up for it. Barber believes that Channel one is a mischief that hasn’t yet come to the light. He gave examples on how this is state propaganda, and what if someone said watch the message of christ for a couple minutes for free equipment. He also says that people have ran away from the idea that John Adams believed in, which is common schools. He made a good point on how kids “learn” to believe everything in school is true. So what if Red Bull constantly had their commercial on how it gives you wings, then all kids would be drinking Red Bull until they get wings.

Global Citizen or Global Consumer?
After reading about Benjamin Barber, i found the passage to be easy to go thru but difficult to understnad. I remember him making good points about how most people would take gifts inorder to watch adverstisement. Channel One is something that happens in schools all across America. I also like how Barber shows how fast America went from being safe and secluded from the rest of the world with the pacific ocean and atlantic ocean protecting it. Since the attacks on the twin towers, america has been exposed and no one is protected from the media and America is viewed as a wired nation. September 11th made it clear that media played a big role, because after the attacks professional athletes were looked upon for help instead of people like Bill Gates or maybe even US citizens. New York, the place of the attacks is the only state that held out and didnt accept Channel One.

Globalization! Is it really that bad?
This quote is something that stood out to me, Globalization cant be stopped because ” the nation becomes too small to solve the big problems, but also too large to solve the small ones”. Globalization will never be stopped and it is something that cant be avoided. People can either deal with it and love it and hate it and still deal with it.
When i first heard about Globalization, everyone made it seem like the world was coming to an end, and i heard alot of things like “americans are going to lose their jobs to people from other countries”. At first i thought i was something bad but now that i look at it, Globalization is going to benefit everyone. I think the only thing that is wrong with globilzation is that people may start to lose their culture. Its crazy how as little as 10 years ago this word was nothing and was barely used, but today its always comes up in the business world.
Countries like Scotland want more indepedence in the UK, the Hong Kong region, Northern Italy, or Silicon Valley are creating cultural zones within and across nations. It also seems like its more of Americanism, because The Soviet and East European regimes tried to prevent reception of western radio and TV broadcasts. Most of the visible Globalization are places like Mcdonalds and Coca Cola. For example look at the cartoon above this blog!!
In the long run Globalization will help everyone across the world and soon there wont be any cultures, everyone will be considered the same.

Nike!!
Nike has made a smart move by doing this and i applaude them on their success, right now i am wearing nikes and they were made in vietnam. This country ecomony is lower than the united states which makes it much more affordable for nike to build factories and hire workers.
Before reading about the marketing and production schemes of nike, i never really thought nothing of it. I believe its all business, why pay people in america who would want more money rather then paying people from another country less. These are great jobs for people of other countries because they are getting paid better than normal jobs like farming or even a doctor!!
If someone chooses to work in a factory rather than being a doctor then there is obviously nothing wrong with that job. Even working in a farm is something of the past, the people of Vietnam would rather be in a air conditioned factory. Nobody wants to go to school for maybe six more years when they could get paid more making sneakers.
